Dell Vostro 1520

Dell Vostro 1520

Review 1:

Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, business

Tech specs: Intel Core 2 Duo T6670 2.2Ghz, 250GB Hard drive, 3GB RAM. Purchased Vostro 1520 to replace Inspiron 6400. Main reason I went with Vostro was ability to downgrade to XP as heard negative feedback about Windows Vista. This is a competitively priced and well put together machine. Simple but effective with none of unnecessary add ons just a solid workhorse. Like anti-glare screen and love the black finish and area surrounding keyboard doesn’t need constant cleaning like other glossy/silver finished machines. Lighter than my previous Inspirion and 6 cell battery good for 2.5-3hrs.

Left palm rest does get warm but not a problem and not to the uncomfortable levels some have written about in previous reviews. If I did have one criticism it would be that keyboard is way too springy for my liking. Overall an excellent laptop and recommended.

Review 2:

Product Uses: Connecting with Friends, music, movies n videos, advanced softwares for designing, college worktech specs : Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 Ghz 3MB L2 Cache 1066MHz FSB , 2 Gb RAM , 250 Gb HDD (7200 Rpm)with basic features (webcam, bluetooth module)and windows vista business – 32bit..well i received my laptop yesterday and i m quite happy with the performance .i used a toshiba satellite earlier. its a decent looking laptop with great value for money. As it is a business end laptop i knew i wont be getting powerful speakers but i was looking for performance this time,n vostro 1520 has certainly provided that.about the heat issue….i think its the wireless card that gets a bit warm but it is not a major issue.its under control…it has a decent webcam n a good enough battery backup of around 2.5-3 hrs…i think one can seriously consider buying this laptop…!!

Cpanel Server Retirements and Replacements

November 4th, 2009 · cPanel

Below is a list of retired  Cpanel/WHM Servers, along with their replacements. These are almost entirely allocated to resellers.

neptune.weycrest.com   =>  cp1.uk.weycrest.com

saturn.weycrest.com => cp3.uk.weycrest.com

xena.weycrest.com / xena.dediquick.net => cp3.uk.weycrest.com

pluto.weycrest.com => cp2.uk.weycrest.com

A new WHM/CPanel server was deployed, cp4.uk.weycrest.com which will be used for our new CPanel Starter, Cpanel Plus, Cpanel Pro and CPanel Ultimate hosting plans.

The new servers run the latest CentOS 5.3 Operating Systems. Numerous other libraries were also upgraded including PHP.

The new Cpanel Servers now run on a redundant cluster, or “cloud.” The old standalone servers were maintained for some weeks, to see how the new hosting performed.  They were turned off when no issue’s were discovered.

BBC Watchdog on Wireless Security

October 31st, 2009 · Wireless

Caught an interesting piece on BBC Watchdog last Thursday (makes a change from dodgy rogue traders). The programme discussed the security implications of using wireless networks in Coffee Shops like Starbucks, and provided scary demonstrations of how hackers can “sniff” unencrypted wireless traffic, hack your mail boxes, and masquarade on Facebook as you!

Needless to say a “celebrity” had to be wheeled out in the form of Rav Wilding pin up, former copper and star of BBC Crimewatch, and more recently Strictly Come Dancing .

The anonymous hacker duly “did the business” and hacked into Rav’s Gmail account. Cue, shocked gasps from Rav.

Then numerous experts were wheeled out. One claiming the solution was secure VPN’s (or Virtual Private Networks). Only problem, said the “expert,” was that VPN’s were a bit geeky, and tricky for normal users to setup. Well that is a bit of a problem. Whilst VPN’s have been established in corporate networks for a while, once you try and come up with simplified, dumbed down, mass market solution, like Windows OS’s, these will be instantly target for vulnerabilities by “crackers.”

But VPN’s are not that tricky to setup! For example Plesk has a VPN module which is actually a bit of a cinch to setup. We’ve tried it and it works. Basically configure your VPN on a Plesk Virtual Private Server ( a bit of clicking and pointing). Then Plesk will give you the option of downloading a small package (a stripped down OpenVPN package with all the configuration done for you) to download and setup on your Windows or Linux desktop.

Then you will be able to connect from your laptop to your Plesk VPS Mail server, sending email and files (over the internet) as if you were connected on a wired secure local network, on a private IP address range. Cool stuff!

The snag is you still need a Plesk VPS which will cost a minumum at least $30 per month. Still cheap and a small price to pay you might think, but not cheap enough for everyone obviously.

The good news is that Weycrest Mail and Web Hosting packages actually support secure email connections as a freebie! So much cheaper than “Skinny Latte” then!

Not only do we support the standard POP3, IMAP and SMTP, but also the less well known counterparts, POP3s, IMAPs, and SMTPs. You’ll get a security message/SSL certificate error when your email client connects, but thats a small price to pay wethinks, for encrypting your mail account details and email traffic.

Its relatively easy to configure too. No chest waxing is required! Mozilla Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express and many other email client software all support secure SSL. Indeed its a get around for problems in sending email because most wireless and 3G networks, quite sensible block outbound port 25 as a spam prevention measure. More info on configuring popular email clients soon!

Linux Cheap Hosting Revamp

October 31st, 2009 · Plesk

We recently renamed and revamped our Linux Cheap Hosting Packages. In some instances more disc space and importantly more data transfer (aka:bandwidth).

Personal => Plesk Starter
Soho => Plesk Plus
Enterprise => Plesk Pro
Corporate => Plesk Ultimate

“Enterprise” and “Corporate” Plans will eventually be reborn for Very Low Contention N+1 Business Solutions being introduced in 2010.

Plesk Plus, Pro and Ultimate also become “Multidomain” with the ability to host multiple websites:

Plesk Starter:
==========
Storage: 750MB
Transfer: 20GB
Number of Sites: 1

Plesk Plus:
========
Storage: 2000MB
Transfer: 50GB
Number of Sites: 3

Plesk Pro:
======
Storage: 3000MB
Transfer: 100GB
Number of Sites: 5

Plesk Ultimate:
===========
Storage: 5000GB
Transfer: 200GB
Number of Sites: 10

So the Plesk Ultimate also effectively replaces our old 10 Domain “Plesk Reseller Light.”

The reasons for the changes are:

1. Distinguish Plesk Hosting from Cpanel Hosting, which we will be offering as an alternative for new customers from January 2010 (existing customers can switch now).

2. Distinguish between Plesk Linux and Plesk Windows Hosting (the latter “coming soon” as they say).

3. Reflect changes in competition.

4. Some customers were hitting limits on the previous “generous” limits and we wanted to guarantee that no customer would ever get an overage bill.

5. Confuse everyone (including ourselves!).

Also we so many “unlimited” offers around from other web hosts please read the small print. Since most web sites are now dynamically power using PHP scripting and MySQL, CPU utilisation and RAM (memory) have become much more important than disc space and “bandwidth”. Whilst a host may offer “unlimited” hosting, they will usually have clauses about “resource utilisation.” Often a Web Host will suspend an account if a site uses more than 5% of a servers resources. So basically “unlimited” plans are unlimited, provided they don’t use more than their fair share of resources!

So there are other reasons for buying the bigger plan, even if you don’t require all the disc space and bandwidth. Plesk Pro and Ultimate have much lower contention. ie: less sites sharing the same servers, and therefore more resources and connections are allocated.

Linux Plesk Upgrades and Server Retirements

October 31st, 2009 · Uncategorized

We have been pretty busy upgrading and putting on new servers. The following Plesk servers have been “retired.”

The Angel Pub at Rotherhithe

The Angel Pub at Rotherhithe

www4.weycrest.com 85.13.221.2/85.13.199.170
www5.weycrest.com 85.13.199.175
www6.weycrest.com 85.13.199.177

www4 replaced with:
uk.lin.plesk4.weycrest.com 87.239.18.127

www5 replaced with:
uk.lin.plesk5.weycrest.com 87.239.18.133

www6 replaced with:
uk.lin.plesk6.weycrest.com 87.239.22.155

Redirects are being put in place to redirect customers to the correct servers if they are using the server IP to connect. However please note you can always use your domain name to connect ie:

Plesk Access:
==========
https://yourdomainhere.com:8443 (SSL enabled)
or
http://yourdomainhere.com:8880 (non SSL enabled)

FTP Access:
=========
ftp.yourdomainhere.com

Servers uk.lin.plesk4.weycrest.com & uk.lin.plesk5.weycrest.com were also upgraded to the latest Plesk 9.3 Control Panel at the same time. One of the benefits being more up to date applications, such as Wordpress, Joomla etc..

uk.lin.plesk6.weycrest.com is still at Plesk 8.6 and will be upgraded shortly.

Data Loss Strikes Again!

October 31st, 2009 · Uncategorized

A couple more stories have emerged on Data Loss that you may or may not have come across over the past few weeks.

The first was from a few days ago, advising that Zurich Insurance in South Africa were backing up to Tapes and they lost one of them. This tape held over 1 million documents, over 50,000 related to UK policy holders who have been informed of the loss!

Article at:
http://www.insurancetimes.co.uk/story.asp?source=itbreakingnews&storycode=380957

The second headline shows once again the security risks & flaws using Cloud based Systems.

T-Mobile USA provide a syncing service on one of their devices that syncs your personal information to Microsoft servers in a Cloud Based Storage Centre. Apparently the data was lost because they attempted to upgrade a storage array without backing it up first!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/11/AR2009101100109.html

Depositit have always been against single server backup systems, faceless cloud locations and the cheap backup solutions that have come onto the market. They are not secure and time after time we are reminded about their security flaws.

Depositit always saves data to a minimum of 2 separate locations and have trading relationships with all 3 of our data centres, we also own and manage all of our infrastructure in order to retain as much control as possible.

There’s no denying that times are tough at the moment, and “cheap alternatives” are being sourced for just about everything. Its one thing replacing your Cornflakes with a supermarket’s own brand but no business should be taking risks with their IT Support and Backups.
